A new parent group for Birmingham

Who are we and what do we want to achieve?

We are a very new parent-led group comprised of parents and prospective parents in Birmingham. We have come together as a result of shared concerns at the rapid and undemocratic way in which schools across the city are being converted, voluntarily or forcibly, to academy status.

On Thursday 12th April 2012 we met as a group for the first time.

It was agreed that we will be campaigning FOR parents to have a say in what happens to their schools, rather than against anything. We believe that parents should have the opportunity to make an informed choice about the future of their schools on consideration of all the facts as part of an open and democratic consultation process. We are primarily a parent group and are parent-led. We welcome non-parents who would like to get involved with the campaign, but as supporters rather than members. Meetings are open to all, and while the group remains small will operate on an informal basis with decisions taken collectively. This will be reviewed as the group grows larger.

We will campaign for open and democratic consultation with parents and prospective parents on school change to include a full and binding parental ballot before a school can convert to an academy.

We will press for Birmingham City Council to follow the precedent set by Norwich Council in expecting all schools considering academy status to conduct open and democratic consultations with secret ballots.

  1. This is an excellent idea. We fully support the principle of open and democratic consultation and binding parent ballot before any school converts to academy status. We are opposed to academies and consider the coalition policy to be back-door privatisation of state education. Community schools belong to the community and must remain accountable to the community.
